What We Do

Many projects have been put on hold during the pandemic. We plan to be ready to pitch in when they are ready to get rolling again.

Fundraiser

Our main fundraiser is the Annual St. Patrick’s Luncheon, the last one, in 2020, being our 65 th . For the last few decades, it has been held in the Garden City Hotel. The wearing of the green is encouraged to complement our green and white decorations. A preluncheon libation is available, and then places are taken at the many tables, all reserved prior to the event. Local dignitaries are present and patriotic songs are sung as well as traditional Irish ditties. A troop of Irish dancers is often available to give a
presentation. Guests may order what they wish, as long as they choose corned beef and cabbage. A comedian holds forth to give everyone a smile or a chuckle. The luncheon is concluded with a raffle of
impressive prizes.

We were lucky to have been able to hold the event last year on its March 11 scheduled date. The disastrous global pandemic got underway March 11-13, and the mandated closures of activities and gatherings of all sorts began as life changed for all of us. We were never accused of being an inadvertent super spreader. St. Patrick was no doubt looking out for us.

Donations of all amounts, from the $20,000 Klapper bequest, to a $20 (and up) listing in our St. Patrick’s Luncheon combination journal, songbook, and wine glass coaster, to a couple Happy Dollars to bribe the group at a club meeting into listening to one’s current contribution, revolution, or devolution, and many and any amounts lesser or greater, are gratefully accepted.

Bequest

A special occurrence took place in December 2020 in the form of a bequest from the estate of Ruth Klapper in the form of a donation of $20,000 in memory of her husband, Ted Klapper, who for many years had a real estate office in Garden City. Hubbell and Klapper was a fixture at the corner of 7th street and Hilton Avenue for many years, and Ted was a member of the Garden City Kiwanis Club for most of those years.
