75th Anniversary / Inauguration of 2026 – 2027 Officers
Our main fundraiser is the Annual St. Patrick’s Luncheon, the last one, in 2020, being our 65th . For the last few decades, it has been held in the Garden City Hotel. The wearing of the green is encouraged to complement our green and white decorations. A preluncheon libation is available, and then places are taken at the many tables, all reserved prior to the event. Local dignitaries are present and patriotic songs are sung as well as traditional Irish ditties. A troop of Irish dancers is often available to give a presentation. Guests may order what they wish, as long as they choose corned beef and cabbage. A comedian holds forth to give everyone a smile or a chuckle. The luncheon is concluded with a raffle of impressive prizes.
We were lucky to have been able to hold the event last year on its March 11 scheduled date. The disastrous global pandemic got underway March 11-13, and the mandated closures of activities and gatherings of all sorts began as life changed for all of us. We were never accused of being an inadvertent super spreader. St. Patrick was no doubt looking out for us.
Donations of all amounts, from the $20,000 Klapper bequest, to a $20 (and up) listing in our St. Patrick’s Luncheon combination journal, songbook, and wine glass coaster, to a couple Happy Dollars to bribe the group at a club meeting into listening to one’s current contribution, revolution, or devolution, and many and any amounts lesser or greater, are gratefully accepted.
Bequest
A special occurrence took place in December 2020 in the form of a bequest from the estate of Ruth Klapper in the form of a donation of $20,000 in memory of her husband, Ted Klapper, who for many years had a real estate office in Garden City. Hubbell and Klapper was a fixture at the corner of 7th street and Hilton Avenue for many years, and Ted was a member of the Garden City Kiwanis Club for most of those years.
Community Service Projects
Awarding scholarships to graduating Garden City high school seniors annually in the name of the Garden City Kiwanis Club, not only for scholastic achievement but for character and service to their communities. 2 Scholarships of $2,000 each were given last year.
Sponsoring of Adelphi University Circle K Club and Garden City HS Key Club. A thousand-dollar check was presented to Adelphi Circle I at the 2020 St. Patrick’s Luncheon to support their Thirst Project, to raise $10,000 to provide a well for a community in sub-Saharan Africa.
Contributing to St. Ann’s Church in Garden City for the Meals for Christmas project. Meals for 24 families were delivered last Christmas.
Delivering donated food from local contributors to Island Harvest/The INN for many years.
Supporting and participating in the Memorial Day Parade, the American Legion Veterans Day ceremonies, and the Easter Antique Car Parade.
Cooking 600 burgers and dogs with trimmings for special needs athletes at the Victory Games and cooking for 500 kids and families taking part in GCAA Challenger Baseball.
Sending kids, including local military kids from Mitchel Field and elsewhere, to Kamp Kiwanis.
Supporting the NY District Kiwanis Foundation disaster relief.
The Kiwanis Club of Garden City’s Board met this morning to plan the 2026–2027 year, with thoughtful discussion and plenty of enthusiasm for the work ahead.
Thank you to our board members for bringing their ideas, energy, and commitment to serving children and our local community!
As we prepare to celebrate our 75th anniversary on October 21, we’re honoring our history and building toward our next chapter.
